What is going on here?
When we think of Cartoon, we think of animation made in America, when we think of Anime we think of animation made in Japan. In year 2014, Japan decided to launch a project,Manga-Anime Guardians project, , to defeat piracy in and outside Japan, aiming at multiple platform, from torrent and file sharing website to online streaming website, to manga online reading website.
My opinion:
I can definitely see the lose of revenue to industry due to piracy, and this is an issue to the industry as now they have to seek other way to sustain their business. Looking at this from the other way, as a consumer we are not supporting our favorite franchise by not paying for it. In the long run, we may become less appreciative for the things we have by continuing these kind of act. The act of this anti-piracy has stirred up quite a spirited debate and panic in numerous anime community because the consumer can no longer have easy access to their favorite franchise. This is an issue because this copyright fiasco is ultimately about who is going to benefit more.... the consumer or the industry. The illegal channels could be one of the main reason as to why anime culture has been so popular outside Japan that would otherwise become another japan-only thing because of Japan attitude of not want to venture outside.
While this topic may not totally fit into the requirement of the assignment, but i felt that this impact the anime fan community in more ways than it seems to be,and it continue to be a topic me and my friend talk occasionally about
Personally, i have benefited from torrent and online file hosting website more than any legal channels, simply because in Singapore, there are very little legal channels to access such media. Comic connection is one of them, but recently they have been closing down around the place i lived, Anime,as in video, is completely non-existence in any local video distribution shop, and lastly figurines or any of those sort are just as rare as the anime itself, moreover they doesn't serve a purpose if the anime they represent is not known to the consumer. However, it is due to those illegal channels i have become an otaku and buy legal anime figurines and manga whenever i found those that i loved.
